MexicoEl Cedral is the oldest Maya settlement on Cozumel island, Mexico, dating to around 800 AD and serving as the island's capital and largest community. Once a bustling center of Maya ritual, trade, and daily life connected to the broader Yucatan Peninsula network, the temple was first dismantled by Spanish conquistadors who arrived in 1518, then further destroyed during World War II by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to build the island's first airport. Today only a small house-sized ruin remains of the former capital.
