The Cittadella (also known as the Castello) is the fortified citadel of Victoria on the island of Gozo, Malta. Archaeological evidence shows habitation since the Bronze Age, with the site believed to have served as the acropolis of the Punic-Roman city of Gaulos. During the medieval period it was transformed into a castle, first documented in 1241. In 1551, virtually the entire population of Gozo was enslaved during an Ottoman raid. Major reconstruction of the southern walls between 1599-1622 created a gunpowder fortress. Since 1998 it has been on Malta's tentative UNESCO World Heritage list.
