Umm el-Jimal

Umm el-Jimal is a multi-period archaeological site in northern Jordan, located approximately 17 km east of Mafraq. The settlement contains substantial above-ground ruins of a Byzantine and early Islamic town, with an older Roman village situated to the southwest of the later structures. Archaeological evidence indicates continuous occupation from the 1st century AD through the 7th century, with major construction phases during the Byzantine period (4th-6th centuries). The ruins include residential houses, churches, and defensive structures built from local basalt stone, representing one of the best-preserved Byzantine rural settlements in the region.
