Phu Phra Bat Historical Park

Phu Phra Bat Historical Park is located in Ban Phue District, Udon Thani Province, Thailand, featuring dramatic sandstone rock formations around which religious shrines have been built across millennia. Prehistoric rock paintings dating to around 2500-3000 years ago depict animals and people in red pigment. The site shows continuous sacred use from prehistory through the Dvaravati period (with boundary stone pillars) and the Khmer era (with rock-carved Buddha images). In 2024, Phu Phra Bat was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the cultural category, recognized as testimony to the Sima stone tradition of the Dvaravati period.
