Bars-Hot

Bars-Hot (Kherlen Bars) was a fortified city built by the Khitan people during the Liao dynasty (10th-11th century) in the Kherlen River basin, Dornod Province, eastern Mongolia. Called Hedong City in Chinese sources, the walled enclosure has western walls of 1,900 metres and walls 3.3-5 metres thick, still standing 1.5-2 metres high. Believed to have served as a military garrison on the empire's northern frontier, the site contains stupas in Indian architectural style and numerous religious artifacts. Its octagonal brick pagoda, the only known Liao dynasty pagoda in Mongolia, was surveyed in 2014 revealing 1.8-metre-thick walls and traces of mural painting, then restored between 2014-2016.
