GuatemalaQ'umarkaj, also known as Utatlan, was the capital of the K'iche' Maya kingdom, founded around 1400 AD by king Q'uq'umatz on an easily defended plateau surrounded by ravines over 100 metres deep. The greater area housed approximately 15,000 inhabitants and featured temples dedicated to Tohil, Awilix, and Jakawitz, along with multiple ballcourts and palaces. In 1524, Spanish conquistador Pedro de Alvarado seized the K'iche' lords and burned the city. The site remains active for traditional Maya ceremonies, particularly at solstices.
