Ahu Akivi

An inland ceremonial platform on Easter Island bearing seven identical moai statues, uniquely oriented to face the ocean rather than inland. According to Rapa Nui tradition, they represent seven explorers sent by King Hotu Matu'a to find the island. The statues are astronomically aligned: they face the sunset at the spring equinox and turn their backs to the autumn equinox sunrise. Restored by archaeologist William Mulloy in the 1960s after being found toppled.
