Rock Carvings in Central Norway

Central Norway, comprising Trondelag and parts of Nordland and More og Romsdal counties, contains approximately 300 rock carving and painting sites from the Stone Age and Bronze Age (c. 6000 BC - 300 AD). Key sites include Bolareinen near Steinkjer with a near life-size reindeer carving up to 5500 years old, Bardal on Beitstadfjorden, and Stykket on the Fosen peninsula with exceptionally lifelike moose depictions. The carvings document the transition from nomadic hunting to permanent settlement, with later Bronze Age boat images sometimes carved over earlier animal figures.
