Rock Carvings at Alta

The Rock Art of Alta consists of over 6,000 prehistoric carvings discovered in 1973 in northern Norway's Finnmark county[1]. The largest concentration at Jiepmaluokta, about 5 km from Alta, features thousands of individual carvings[1]. Five sites including Jiepmaluokta, Storsteines, Kåfjord, Amtmannsnes, and Transfarelv were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List on December 3, 1985, making this Norway's only prehistoric World Heritage Site[1].
