Pagar Alam

Pagar Alam is a city on the Pasemah (Besemah) Plateau in South Sumatra, Indonesia, home to one of the most impressive megalithic complexes in Southeast Asia. The highlands around Mount Dempo contain groups of menhirs, stone blocks with mortars, carved troughs with human heads, terraced platforms, dolmens, stone burial chambers, and dynamic carvings of humans and animals. Dating to roughly 2,000 years ago, these monuments were created by the Besemah people, known for their martial prowess and ancestor veneration, with megaliths serving as centres of ritual life.
