Hedum castellum was an ancient Illyrian fortified settlement and city located in central Bosnia, situated in what is now the modern town of Breza, Bosnia and Herzegovina [1]. The site served as the political and administrative capital of the Daesitiates, one of the major Illyrian tribes that inhabited the region during the Iron Age and Roman period [1][2]. The name "Hedum Kastelum" derives from the Illyrian language, translating to "Inhabited Castle" or "Naseljena tvrđava" in Serbo-Croatian [1]. Archaeological excavations have revealed substantial remains including a large early Christian Basilica with remarkably preserved carved stone pillars and capitals, as well as a complex necropolis featuring various tomb types [1]. The settlement was strategically positioned on elevated terrain, typical of Illyrian hillfort traditions, controlling important trade routes through central Bosnia [1]. Today, the site represents one of the most significant Illyrian archaeological sites in the region, though only the Basilica foundations and grave tomb structures remain visible above ground [1].
