In the Roman period (1st-3rd c. AD), Elewijt hosted an important vicus at the junction of a secondary road (deverticulum) with the major Roman road connecting Tongeren and Boulogne [1]. A temporary military camp was established in the early first century, followed by civilian settlement development [1]. At the end of the second century, Germanic tribes devastated the village, which was subsequently rebuilt with a different ground plan [1]. The vicus persisted until the late third century but failed to recover from a second major attack, after which it was abandoned [1]. The modern village of Elewijt developed approximately half a mile south and is not considered a direct successor to the Roman settlement [1].
