Little River Canyon in Alabama is a unique geological area where the river flows for most of its length atop Lookout Mountain in northeast Alabama. The canyon features dramatic cliffs and scenic vistas within the Little River Canyon National Preserve, located near Fort Payne, Alabama, and DeSoto State Park. The area is notable for its forested uplands and waterfalls. The river is unique among southeastern rivers for flowing across the top of a mountain rather than down from one. Little River is one of the few rivers in North America flowing on top of a mountain.
