Over 2,000 years ago, Hero of Alexandria built self-opening temple doors! 🔥 His ingenious system used heated air expansion to automatically open temple doors. When fire heated air in a sealed vessel beneath the temple, the expanding air displaced water from a container. As water was displaced, it released a counterweight that opened the doors. When the fire was extinguished, cooling caused the air to contract, water flowed back, and gravity reset the mechanism to close the doors—no manual reset needed! 🚪⚙️
Hero of Alexandria's automated temple doors using heat and air pressure
Key facts
- Hero of Alexandria invented automatic doors over 2,000 years ago
- System used heat expansion, air pressure, and mechanical feedback
- Fire heated air in a vessel, creating pressure that opened doors
- When fire was extinguished, cooling air contracted, allowing water to flow back and close doors
- Self-regulating mechanism required no manual reset
- Resembles modern automatic doors but used only thermal energy and mechanics
