Stony H-chondrite meteorites are by far the most common meteorite type in near-Earth space. Stony meteorites are over 95% of observed falls, while iron meteorites are rare. The cosmic traffic never stops. ☄️
H-chondrite stony meteorites are 70 times more abundant than iron asteroids in near-Earth space
Key facts
- H-chondrite is a species of meteorite inhabiting near-Earth space
- Stony meteorites (chondrites) are approximately 3 times less dense than iron asteroids
- For every iron object that strikes Earth leaving a crater, there are 70 stony chondrite objects
- Spectral analysis confirms stony objects are 17 times more abundant than iron objects
- Chondrites larger than 30-50 feet in diameter can cause surface damage when they explode in atmosphere
- Objects 10 feet in diameter strike Earth's atmosphere with energy exceeding Hiroshima bomb multiple times per year at 15-20 miles altitude
- Chondrites smaller than 150 feet diameter explode in atmosphere rather than creating impact craters
