De Soto chronicled dense Native cities in the American Southeast. 150 years later, French and English explorers found tiny bands of Native Americans—the Mississippian chiefdoms De Soto documented had collapsed from disease epidemics introduced by earlier Spanish contact, including slave raids and European illnesses spreading through trade networks. These population collapses followed patterns seen across the Americas following European contact.
