Mount Vottovaara, rising 417 metres in Karelia, Russia, hosts between 1,000 and 1,600 sacred stones called seids, revered by the Sami people as embodiments of nature spirits. Discovered as an ancient worship complex by Sergey Simonyan in 1978, the site features massive propped boulders sometimes called 'flying stones' that appear to levitate on smaller support stones. The mountain combines evidence of tectonic and glacial activity with what some researchers believe are deliberately arranged megalithic constructions, though scientific consensus on their man-made origin remains divided.
