Tanais was an ancient Greek city in the Don river delta, known as the Maeotian marshes in classical antiquity [1]. Archaeological evidence shows the site was occupied since the Bronze Age, with a necropolis of over 300 burial kurgans discovered nearby [2]. Tanais served as a bishopric under the name Tana and today remains a Latin Catholic titular see [1].
