Obelisk of Axum

The Obelisk of Axum is a 4th-century CE monument standing 24 metres (79 ft) tall and weighing approximately 160 tonnes[1]. It is carved from a single block of phonolite, a type of volcanic rock[1]. The massive stelae is ornamented with two false doors at its base and features decorations resembling windows on all four sides[1]. The obelisk terminates in a semi-circular top that was originally enclosed by metal frames[1]. Located in the ancient city of Axum in Ethiopia, this megalithic structure is part of a larger necropolis.
