The Ruins of Cyrene

Cyrene, founded around 631 BC by Greek colonists from Thera, became one of the principal cities of the Hellenistic world and later a major Roman capital [1]. The city flourished for nearly a millennium until devastated by a catastrophic earthquake in 365 AD [2]. Today, its extensive ruins spread across a wide area, featuring the Temple of Apollo, a large agora, Roman baths, and a theater carved into the hillside [1]. As one of the most important ancient cities in North Africa, Cyrene represents a unique fusion of Greek and Roman architectural traditions [1].
