The Lion Man stands 31.1 cm tall and is among humanity’s oldest known sculptures — carved from mammoth ivory about 35,000–40,000 years ago. The lion-human figurine took an estimated 400 hours to carve. It was found in Hohlenstein-Stadel Cave and reassembled from more than 300 fragments. It belongs to the Aurignacian period, a European archaeological culture spanning roughly 43,000–26,000 years ago.

The UNESCO-listed Swabian Jura complex comprises six caves, not four: Hohle Fels, Hohlenstein-Stadel, Geissenklösterle, Sirgenstein, Vogelherd and Hohlefels. Used about 43,000–33,000 years ago, they yielded stone tools, animal figurines, personal ornaments and some of the oldest known flutes and other musical instruments. The caves document early modern humans’ dispersal into Europe and preserve some of the oldest known figurative art.
