The royal necropolis of Meroe, located approximately 200 km northeast of Khartoum, Sudan, served as the burial ground for the rulers of the Kingdom of Kush from around the 3rd century BC to the 4th century AD. The site comprises a Northern Cemetery with 23 pyramids and a Southern Cemetery with 10 pyramids. Italian treasure hunter Giuseppe Ferlini demolished the tops of over 40 pyramids in the 1830s searching for gold.
