Al-Musawwarat as-Sufra

Musawwarat es-Sufra is a large Meroitic temple complex in western Butana, Sudan, 180 km northeast of Khartoum, dating from the 3rd century BC. Its key structures include the Lion Temple dedicated to the god Apedemak, the Great Enclosure with a ground plan unparalleled in the Nile valley, and large water reservoirs (hafirs). Elephant representations are abundant throughout the site. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011 as part of the Island of Meroe.
