Keskese

Keskese is a pre-Aksumite archaeological site in Eritrea, situated 8 km north of Matara at an elevation of 2,421 metres. Dating from around 500 BC, it was a seat of the ancient D'mt kingdom and is renowned for its seven monolithic stelae, some reaching up to 14 metres in height. A small inscription on one stela mentions Rd'm, referred to as king. Some edifices at the site bear Ge'ez inscriptions. The site was excavated by Daniel Habtemichael in the early 2000s and represents an important link in the region's pre-Aksumite trade routes.
