Rivas District

A Chiriqui Period (AD 750-1500) archaeological site in the Perez Zeledon canton, San Jose province, Costa Rica, discovered in the 1980s by Robert Drolet [1]. Excavations began in 1992 under Jeffrey Quilter of the Peabody Museum, Harvard University [1]. Over six years, researchers identified residential areas with river cobble structures in circular patterns ranging from 10 to 30 metres in diameter with adjoining rectangular patios [1]. Paths, causeways, plazas, and stairways were recorded throughout [1]. Over 600,000 ceramic sherds were recovered, with 60% of rims decorated in the Buenos Aires Polychrome tradition, considered Chiriqui Period 'fiesta ware' [1].
