The ancient Funan sites of Angkor Borei and Phnom Da are located in the Angkor Borei District, Takéo Province of southern Cambodia, about 150 km from the seacoast near the Vietnam border. Carbon dating confirms settlements from roughly 1523 BC, with continuous occupation for at least 500 years. The complex contains the earliest known dated Khmer inscriptions and represents what may be the earliest tradition of Khmer sculpture, fusing Southeast Asian cultural and artistic influences.
