Nipisat Island

A small uninhabited island in central-western Greenland, 15 km south of Sisimiut, containing a major Saqqaq culture archaeological site representing the earliest documented human occupation of Greenland (c. 2500-800 BC). Excavations from 1989 to 1994 uncovered over 70,000 bone fragments, 20,000 flakes, and 1,000 artefacts, with radiocarbon dating revealing nearly 1,500 years of continuous occupation. Caribou comprised 55% of mammal remains, reflecting seasonal inland hunting strategies. In 2018, the site was inscribed as part of the Aasivissuit-Nipisat UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognizing over 4,200 years of Arctic hunting traditions.
