The Great Sphinx sits approximately 500m east of Khafre's pyramid and 400m southeast of Khufu's. Carved into a U-shaped ditch open to the east, quarried from natural rock. The stone rubble walls (330–470m wide) define the pyramid precincts, with the Sphinx squarely in Khafre's precinct. These peribolus walls appear to have been built at the same time as the pyramids.
