Balanced Rock, North Salem

A massive pink granite glacial erratic perched atop five smaller limestone supports in North Salem, Westchester County, New York. The boulder measures approximately 16 x 14 x 10 feet and weighs an estimated 60-90 tons. Deposited by retreating glaciers roughly 10,000 years ago, its granite composition does not match local bedrock and likely originated from the Hudson Highlands. Glacial striations on the supporting stones confirm natural deposition rather than human construction. Some have speculated it is a dolmen, though no archaeological evidence supports this.
