Ecuador's largest and most important Inca archaeological complex, located in Canar province. Built on a site originally sacred to the Canari people, who worshipped the moon here before the Inca conquest. The elliptical Temple of the Sun, unique in the Inca empire, was constructed with mortarless stonework atop an ancient Canari ceremonial rock and aligned so sunlight enters its doorway during solstices. The complex also includes the House of the Chosen, underground aqueducts, storage rooms, and agricultural terraces.
