A carved statue at the lower levels of Texcotzingo doesn't look Aztec at all, it may actually be Olmec! The figure appears to wear a hat or helmet adorned with symbols, and the carvings show what looks like Olmec symbology. Monolithic columns were found, completely absent from Aztec architecture but characteristic of the Olmecs. Basalt columnar blocks similar to those at the Olmec tomb of La Venta were also discovered. This strongly suggests the site was already sacred long before Nezahualcoyotl ever set foot there.
