Satellite SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) technology is being adapted for archaeological use. By bouncing radar signals off the ground and interpreting echoes, it can detect buried structures and has potential for heritage monitoring. The technology uses radio signals to identify subsurface features—though specific claims about creating 3D models showing density variations require further verification. 📡🔍
Italian team adapts satellite SAR technology for archaeology
Key facts
- SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) is a satellite-based technology adapted for archaeology by Filippo Beondi
- Originally used in volcano and earth science fields
- Uses radio signals sent from multiple angles to create 3D models showing pockets of lesser density
- Does not require on-site access or permits
- Different from muon detection technology used by the Scan Pyramids project
- Filippo created new software to interpret satellite data for archaeological sites
