Many Gnostic traditions taught that humanity carries a divine spark originating in a higher realm. Awakening this spark through gnosis could restore its connection with its source. Nag Hammadi texts and the Gospel of Thomas explore this spiritual knowledge. Some Gnostic movements were suppressed, but “traditional Christianity decided to exterminate this view” overstates a complex history.
Gnostic Spirituality and the Divine Spark
Key facts
- Many Gnostic traditions taught that a divine spark or pneuma originated in the higher realm and could be restored through gnosis.
- Nag Hammadi texts and the Gospel of Thomas are associated with Gnostic spirituality, but they do not uniformly teach that awakening always means becoming an angelic being.
- Gnostic movements were often declared heretical and sometimes suppressed, but the claim that traditional Christianity decided to “exterminate this view” is an overstatement.
