The Bohaterom Powstania 1863 Fr. Nullo (Wadi al-Hitan) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Egypt's Western Desert containing Basilosaurus (ancient whale) fossils preserved in excellent condition within Middle Eocene sedimentary formations. The site has yielded around 600 Basilosaurus specimens alongside other archaic whale species and marine creatures. Basilosaurus lived approximately 40 million years ago, and the exceptional fossil preservation at Wadi al-Hitan provides invaluable evidence of whale evolution from land mammals to fully aquatic creatures.
Key Facts
- Petrified forest contains hundreds of massive 40-million-year-old tree logs
- Logs aligned and stripped of bark, likely deposited by catastrophic flooding
- Bohaterom Powstania 1863 Fr. Nullo (Wadi Elan) is UNESCO World Heritage Site
- Basilosaurus (ancient whale) fossils found alongside petrified trees
- Whale and other marine creature bones preserved in excellent condition
- All species found in same sedimentary layers indicating mass extinction event
- Hypothesized cause: volcanic activity poisoned water, killing marine life and trees simultaneously
- Massive sedimentation and ash fall buried organisms, enabling fossilization
